He was in the war at the time of her birth and stationed in Nancy, France. He told everyone that she was his 'Nancy Baby'. Harriet was a wonderful lady who was very family orientated. There was nothing she wouldnt do for any member of her family. She loved to do her gardening. Her garden was beautiful, with fruit and vegetables on the right hand side and on the left, a huge Magnolia tree (her son Philip had bought for her), a lawned area leading to a shed with trellis either side and roses growing through the trellis, peach coloured one side and yellow the other. Behind the shed was her potato patch. Each side of the garden path was awash with different coloured flowers. Every Sunday she would take her grandaughter Ann-Marie down the garden to dig up potatoes and veg for dinner. Then on the way back up the garden she would choose which fruit to have for afters. There was a choice of many different fruits, strawberries, gooseberries. She always worked hard but never had alot of money. She paid into 'divis' and when they matured she always shared the money with her family. One year she bought her grandchildren Paula, a dolls house, Ann-Marie, an organ and Graham, a pedal car. Expensive gifts especially when one considers that her other son Philip had 4 children and she always gave the same amount to each. She had a budgie called Fred that she spent ages teaching to talk. She said that he did talk but nobody ever heard it! She used to sit in her chair with the coffee table in front of her playing the card game Patience, for ages most days. She smoked Woodbine cigarettes. She always wore a smock type apron over her clothes, unless she went out. She loved 'Galaxy' chocolate and used to buy a large bar every week and break off a couple of squares each night to have with a cup of tea. She had many sayings eg ' You can trust a thief but never a liar' 'A jobs not worth doing if you dont do it well' 'What goes around, comes around' 'I'll treat you when my ship comes in' She was always singing, all types of songs but she loved Max Bygraves because he always reminded her of 'her Ernie'. She also loved the song, 'When a child is born' by Jonny Mathis. She never got over the death of her 2nd son Brian and when Graham came along she refused to leave him and 'wrapped him up in cotton wool', so afraid she was that she would lose him too. She said that Brian had died in her arms and that she kept tapping his face to try to keep him awake as she knew that if he went to sleep she would never get him back.
